Natural remedy for hay fever and allergy: butterbur
Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, occurs when the immune system overreacts to particles in the air normally harmless, causing symptoms such as runny nose, itchy nose and sneezing. Hay fever is one of the most common allergies, affecting about 40 million people in the United States.

Hay fever symptoms: post-nasal drip, nasal congestion, sneezing, watery eyes, itchy, watery eyes, nose or throat,  cough, fatigue , facial pain or pressure.

The Butterbur

The herb butterbur ( Petasites hybridus ) is a shrubby plant that grows in northern Asia, Europe and parts of North America. Extracts made from the herb have been used in folk medicine for migraines, stomach aches, cough, allergies and asthma.

Although we do not know how butterbur, is thought to work similarly to allergy medications, by blocking the action of histamine and leukotrienes, inflammatory chemicals involved in allergic reactions.

In a study of 186 people with hay fever, the participants took a higher dose of butterbur (one tablet three times daily), a lower dose (one tablet twice daily) or placebo. After two weeks, the symptoms of both the higher dose and lower allergy eased, compared with placebo, but there was no significantly greater benefit observed with higher doses.  READ MORE
